Reverse Engineered: Progress

Image
Progress update on the reverse-engineered assignment. I went forward with the white-out container. There are a lot of easy small parts to model so that's what I started with. I am mostly nervous about modelling the overall shape of the container.  I won't lie modelling the left circular shape was a pain but I'm glad it's almost done. I have a few small details to add. I tried my best to round out the sharp edges using the filletedges command but I might go back in and make them rounder.

Assignment 2: Laser Cut Tile

Image
Here are the results of my tile design. It's a cheaper material, but I love the appearance of the wood's colour and textures. For the tile, I used cherry plywood. Sadly, with the cherry wood, the darks and grey hatches are difficult to tell apart once cut, so this was disappointing. The other plywood options would have darker values but I liked the red tones in the cherry wood.  Once the project is over I will try and darken some lines up, especially in the centre.  I thought about making the inner area of the border hollow but I was worried the rest of the design would fall out or snap off, so I changed the border shape. I think it suits a tile more like this.

Reverse Engineered: Three Objects Selection

Image
The first object I'm considering modelling is an empty white-out dispenser. There are quite a few complicated parts so this object is the most interesting out of the three objects. There are a lot of circular shapes to work with and six different parts that are complicated but not enough to make my brain explode (yet).  The second object is a pencil sharpener. Honestly, I think this is the least interesting out of the three and it's fairly simple considering there are only three parts to it. The overall shape of the sharpener would be the most challenging part.  The third object is a bic pen. This object would be interesting to model and I was kind of wanting to do a pen. I used to dismantle these all the time in middle school when I was bored. I found it challenging to dismantle it completely as some parts are stuck together. I could buy a different brand of pen and try that instead maybe.

Assignment 2: 3D Applications

I cropped the array for the final surface design image so it would repeat nicely. I also hatched in the black parts so there were no weird empty white sections on the objects. The three renders are a sphere, a fabric-like surface and a simple circular shape I thought resembled something a ring made out of resin or glass. The sphere reminds me of easter egg paintings.

Assignment 2: Surface Design

Image
I didn't have an image in my head initially, so I found some random examples of surface design throughout the week that were interesting. I ended up with a framed circular design influenced by floral and gothic motifs like you'd find on a book or the back of a card.  I also made some strange organic shapes to emphasize the focal point and to make it feel a little unsettling I added the eye in the center of the smallest flower.  I was torn between purple/red traditional gothic colour palettes or a floral green colour palette. The purple version ended up being my least favourite so I like the other two best. I created an arrayed version of both for the final design.  The ten pictures  I used as a reference:  Books I bought at the bookstore. (I wanted to read them anyway).  Cards from my Granny's house.   A floor at a museum.  Wall piece which inspired the frame.  Outdoor rug.  Peel and stick stained glass. The flowers inspired the flo...
